It never occured to me that visiting professorships would become a structural part of my cv. But looking back on the past fifteen years, there were quite some semesters dedicated to teaching at universities ‘abroad’. In particular Namur in Belgium and Padova in Italy.

It is of course a privilege and a pleasure to become a visiting fellow. It is a way to keep in touch with different educational realities and disciplines, with foreign languages, with colleagues and of course with a different student audience.

Over the years, the frequent visits to Namur, in 2004, 2008, 2011-12 and 2017, allowed me to continue teaching Dutch literary history. I remember in particular the courses dedicated to literature of the Middle Ages and Renaissance, to emblems and songs, to psalms in translation and to Romanticism and Naturalism. Teaching in Padova in 2016 was good for an enriching and refreshing sabbatical. The following years, in 2018 and 2019, I was invited to continue some of my teaching in Padova, ‘keeping alive’ the cattedra of Dutch language and literature. I remember in particular the courses dedicated to the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century, to Dutch Songs, to minority languages in the Netherlands and to literary translations. All these topics are visible in my publications. Thanks to all my colleagues and students for their warm welcome in these years!
