Charles van Leeuwen, PhD (born in Delft, NL, 1962), is historian. He is currently teaching at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences of the University of Maastricht (since 2007) and, part-time, serving as secretary to the Congregation of the Brothers of Mercy (Tilburg), an ONG in the field of catholic education. He worked for many years in the field of Dutch Studies in an international context. Among other functions, he was appointed Director of Maastricht University Language Centre (1999-2007) and staff member of the official Language Certificate of the Dutch Language Union (1992-1996).

Earlier teaching and management positions were at the universities of Utrecht (1984-1986), Bologna (1986-1992), Louvain-la-Neuve (1992-1996) and Nijmegen (Titus Brandsma Instituut, 1996-1999). Among his academic and didactic specializations: assessment, blended learning and multilingal education. In recent years, he combined his work with visiting professorships at the universities of Namur and Padua.

His publications include books and articles about Dutch literature and history, religious history, language teaching and language policy.
